Fathima Shirin Shana selected for Woman Scientist Scheme

AT Fathima Shirin Shana, Research Scholar, University of Calicut, has been selected for the prestigious Woman Scientist Scheme of Science and Technology Department, Govt. of India. She has been awarded a purse of Rs.16, 65,000/-, computer and travel allowance. Shana is the only research scholar in Kerala to win this achievement.

Her research program is being progressed under the guidance of Dr. M. M. Musthafa, Head of the Department of Physics. The research topic is ‘Secondary Neutron Production and Validation of Nuclear Reaction’, which is very important in the fields of nuclear reactor, accelerator and radiation dosimetry. Therapies such as radiotherapy and the production of neutrons in nuclear reactors and their effects will be studied. The experiments will be conducted at the Inter University Accelerator Center in New Delhi.

Fatima Shirin Shana is the daughter of Perinthalmanna Arimprathodi Kunjimoitheen Master and Rajila. Shana’s husband, Shameed, is the research scholar, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi.

Department of Science and Technology (DST) launched “Women Scientists Scheme (WOS)” during 2002-03. This initiative primarily aimed at providing opportunities to women scientists and technologists between the age group of 27-57 years who had a break in their career but desired to return to mainstream. Through this endeavour of the Department, concerted efforts have been made to give women a strong foothold into the scientific profession, help them re-enter into the mainstream and provide a launch pad for further forays into the field of science and technology.
