Shabeena Kamarudheen awarded Ph. D degree on her study, ‘Evaluation of anticancer potential and possible mechanism of action of Nigella sativa extracts’ under the supervision of Dr. Moshhid Alam Rizvi, Professor, Department of Biosciences, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. This research was done on the seed extracts of Nigella sativa (commonly known as ‘kalonji’ in North India) were proven to have significant anticancer effects against three cancer cell lines viz. breast, liver and cervical. Thymoquinone, an important compound from the seed extract showed significant anti proliferative effect against the above mentioned cancer cell lines than the extracts.

Dr. Shabeena Kamarudheen is basically from Palakkad District of Kerala, she has done her postgraduate in Medical Biochemistry from University of Calicut and had secured second rank. She is the second daughter of A. Kamarudheen and Hameedha Kamarudheen. She is working with her husband Mohamed Ajeesh at Alshifa hospital, New Delhi. Rihan Ahmed is her son. She is the executive member of Women’s Manifesto.
